Investment objective
The Fund aims to achieve long term returns that are higher than the Benchmark. In doing so, it aims to balance capital growth, income generation and risk of loss, using a mix of assets.
Fund description
The Contrarius Australia Balanced Fund is an actively managed asset allocation fund that invests in a diversified portfolio of equities, fixed income and commodity-linked investments from Australia and globally.
The Fund primarily invests in listed equities and equity related securities, fixed income instruments and commodity-linked instruments. The Fund primarily gains its exposure to global assets by investing in the Contrarius Global Balanced Fund (Australia Registered) which follows a similar investment strategy.
Investment strategy
The Fund employs the Contrarius valuation-based, contrarian investment philosophy to identify investments that are undervalued relative to their assessed intrinsic value. The Fund has the flexibility to take advantage of opportunities across asset classes and regions, subject to defined investment guidelines.
The Fund may be suitable for investors who:
- seek exposure to an actively managed asset allocation fund that typically invests in a portfolio of Australian and global equities, fixed income instruments, commodity-linked instruments and cash.
- seek capital growth over the long term
- plan to stay invested for at least 5 years
- have a high risk and return profile
- intend to use the Fund as a part of a portfolio of investments

Investors in the Fund will indirectly bear management fees and/or performance fees payable in interposed vehicles. The Contrarius Global Balanced Fund (Australia Registered) has a base fee of 0.75% per annum of the NAV, and a performance fee of 25.00% of outperformance of the Global Fund benchmark (after deduction of management fees and costs), subject to a since inception relative high watermark. Gross returns are calculated gross of all income, assume reinvestment of distributions and are net of expenses excluding investment management fees. Net returns are calculated gross of all income, assume reinvestment of distributions, are net of expenses and investment management fees and exclude the buy/sell spread. Returns are based on valuations using prices at market close. Returns for periods of less than one year are not annualised. The benchmark for the Contrarius Australia Asset Allocation Strategy is a composite index consisting of 36% S&P/ASX 300 Accumulation Index, 24% S&P/ASX iBoxx Australian Government Index, including reinvested coupons, 24% MSCI World Index, including reinvested net income, and 16% J.P. Morgan Global Government Bond Index, including reinvested coupons, each in Australian dollars ("Custom Benchmark"). The benchmark is rebalanced daily.
Prior to 1 July 2025, the Australian fixed income index component of the custom benchmark was the S&P/ASX Australian Government Bond Index, and the benchmark data reflects this.
